General Information for Visitors to SARC

Search and Rescue Canines-SA
Urban Search and Rescue
Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) canine and handler teams are an integral part of rescue work, searching for missing, lost or injured people, specifically in scenarios such as 9/11 and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.
We welcome your interest and to enable you to participate safely within our regulations, have included a few requirements for the day.
Visitors planning to join SARC
Persons visiting SARC with the intentions to join and become a member of the group, please also read the Recruiting Framework to see what can be expected progressively during visits.
What you can expect on the day
To observe tasks and training required of the search and rescue canine and handler.
or those interested in joining, this day DOES NOT require you to bring your dog and is handler only allowed, giving you having a chance to see what it is really all and about and to meet the team without the distraction of your dog. Also allowing an explanation of procedures to be followed and canine vaccination protocol required prior to joining.
When taking part as a ‘lost’ person, if deemed appropriate by the head instructor on the day.
Hiding areas are normally fairly dusty so ensure your clothes are suitable to handle a little dirt.
Attire
Please ensure to be dressed in or have with you as follows:
Long sleeved shirt\jumper
Full length trousers
Closed-in sturdy shoes
In winter dressing for warmth is strongly advised
In summer don’t forget sun cream and a hat
Any further personal protection equipment will be supplied on the day.
For those considering joining please bring a current vaccination certificate covering your dog for distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus and kennel cough (C5 vaccination) to enable your dog to participate in NEXT session if approved.
Times
Start time: 9:00 am Saturday mornings
Finish: approximately 12 noon, variable depending on participant numbers and sometimes the speed of the dog’s noses!
